WIRE MOUNTED INDICATOR SHOWS CURRENT FLOW AT A GLANCE St. Louis -- Production begins on a small electrical maintenance device designed to aid electrical troubleshooting faster than anything on the market today.

Invented and developed by James E. Bubash, himself an electrical engineer, the CURRENT RING Indicator slips over a wire or cable and indicates the flow of electrical current with a red glow from its built-in indicator light. Anytime the light goes off, an interruption or failure of current flow is indicated. The indicator was designed to help maintenance engineers diagnose electrical problems faster and easier than -- for instance -- one can with the aid of a "clamp on" test instrument.

"Some companies' down time on electrical equipment can run into the thousands of dollars per hour," said Bubash. "The success of the wire mounted current indicator will be related to its ability to substantially reduce down time, since it allows for significantly faster problem detection." Bubash said that with the use of a number of indicators in an electrical panel, for example, maintenance personnel can look at a panel at a glance and know if there is a problem.

Bubash said another benefit to the new wire mounted indicator is its ability to indicate the flow of electricity remote from the actual load. As an example, he said: "With the indicator, you can check the status of an electric motor some distance from its control panel, so you don't have to be at the motor to check its operation." He also recommends the installation of the indicators in process heating applications that require electrical heating elements wired in parallel. With the indicators attached to each of the heaters, an open element can be detected immediately. A special bracket is available to panel mount the indicators.

The indicator is a completely self-contained, non-obtrusive device, about one inch in diameter. It is housed in a bright yellow, non-conductive plastic for quick sighting in a complicated machine or network of wires. The indicator is permanently installed on all key wires by simply slipping it over each wire, it requires absolutely no splices or electrical connections. The indicator will accept one size #6 AWG wire through its center or up to four passes of a size #18 AWG wire. Designed to indicate an "open" or "shorted" wire, the indicator light glows red as long as it detects any current flow of two amps or more.

Product testing by the CR Magnetics, Inc. indicates the indicator is extremely rugged and reliable, mainly because of the extreme simplicity of the design and function of the device. The proprietary design contains a toroidal wound current transformer attached to a high-efficiencyLED through several voltage limiting components.

A good inventory exists for quick delivery to maintenance engineers across North America. Several patents have been granted on the indicator.

The current indicators are available from electrical distributors throughout the United States at a retail price of $17.85 each, discounts are being offered for larger orders.
